Architectural interventions by Powell Tuck Associates invite the outside in at this award-winning four-bedroom home for sale, on the fringes of Avondale Park.

Found beneath the canopy of a London plane tree, this detached home sits in harmony with its setting. Contemporary in design and practical in layout, its Powell Tuck Associates conceived structure is a lesson in light and space, with vast expanses of glass that frame leafy views to the front and back. Standing on the site of a Victorian chapel turned boxing club, its one-of-a-kind blueprint has been recognised with a Sunday Times Interior Design Award. Currently presented as a four-bedroom home, with a study, gym and recording studio, it offers versatility across a footprint of more than 3,250 sq ft.

At the touch of a button, electric cast-iron gates open to reveal an imposing brick façade. Lush greenery and cedar brise soleil envelope the exterior in a layer of privacy, setting the tone for the soothing interiors. With its wall of sliding glazing, double-height void and clerestory window, the open-plan living space is voluminous, but its expansive proportions don’t come at the expense of warmth. Exposed brick and large format tiles introduce a patchwork of textures, while an open fireplace and underfloor heating bring a cosy dimension. Off to one side, a quiet study features a custom-made desk and shelving unit, and access to the tranquil front garden.

Positioned at the rear of the ground floor, sunflower-yellow cabinets, black mosaic tiles and oiled-oak cabinets have been combined to eye-catching and ergonomic effect in the striking kitchen and dining room. Backdropped by another wall of glazing, the space opens onto an inviting bamboo-lined garden.

Full-height doors and cleverly concealed storage contribute to the sense of space throughout. Linking all four levels, an understated Dinesen Douglas Fir staircase forms the spine of the home, interspersed with windows that enable an uninterrupted sightline to outside. On the lower ground floor, sections of glazing channel natural light down into a gym and entertainment room with an in-built projector and speakers. Also on this level, there’s a soundproofed recording studio with an en suite shower room that would make an ideal bedroom for teenagers or visiting guests.

Spanning the entire first floor, the principal suite offers soothing views of Avondale Park via a glazed wall. For an alternative perspective, peer over the gallery to the living space below. A row of wardrobes leads to an en suite bathroom with a calming atmosphere. High clerestory windows screened by brise soleil diffuse the natural light, accentuating the space’s uplifting volumes.

Low level glazing adds a sense of playfulness to two further bedrooms, found on the second floor – the larger of which comes with its own dressing room. Both are served by a skylit bathroom.
