SHAKESPEARE IN THE SQUARES

Down the community path

Some of you may have heard it through the grapevine that Domus Nova was running a pop up bar.  You heard right!  This July we had the privileged opportunity to be involved in a very exciting community gardens initiative – Shakespeare in the Squares.  A not-for-profit touring theatre company, the group staged a 1918s rendition of Much Ado About Nothing in nine different garden squares around west London – each production tailored to its individual square. As one of the key sponsors, we are proud to have helped provide a showcase for talented young practitioners and to introduce audiences to some stars of the future.

This wasn’t just a performance; it was an opportunity for locals to enjoy their gardens in a way they may not have before. And we were invited to contribute to the experience. So we couldn’t think of anything more appropriate than providing the audiences with a refreshing summer cocktail.  Straying off the beaten path, we turned our efforts towards building a bar; virgin territory for us.

What had then started as a simple sponsorship, quickly evolved into an opportunity to get creative and collaborate with the wider design community. Cue Goldfinger Factory. As a platform for local artisans to develop their skills, this award-winning social enterprise focuses on adding value to upcycled materials through great design and craftsmanship. Together, we were able to realise our idea and The Bar was born.

Having created a podium from which to serve our refreshing summer cocktail (the perfect combination of Pinkster Gin, raspberries and mint), we enjoyed getting to know the people that live in and around the gardens.

No two events were the same, but each one was incredibly special. We are thrilled to have been able to play our part at Leinster Square, Elgin Crescent and Arundel Garden Square, Queen’s Park, St James’ Gardens, Norland Square and Cleveland Square. The atmosphere was unconditionally electric and we had the most fantastic time being right at the centre of all the action.

A huge thank you to Shakespeare in the Squares for approaching us to get involved, the team at Goldfinger Factory for building a superb bar, and our fabulous team here at Domus Nova who approached each event with professionalism and enthusiasm. Can’t wait to pop up again!
