Ibiza has never exactly been an island of velvet ropes. It’s always been more about the right introduction.
Few know that better than Olivia Bowlby and Jack Baucher of bespoke lifestyle service and concierge BHB Private. Between them, the couple have spent more than 15 years getting to know the island – and the people who make it tick.
That matters in a place that resists being labelled as any one thing. After all, Ibiza can be shorthand for hidden coves and mega clubs, centuries-old fincas and new-wave restaurants, yoga among the pines and dance floors still going at sunrise. But for all its international pull, it remains close-knit enough that some of its best experiences are still passed from person to person.
Olivia and Jack have seen the island from almost every angle. There have been late nights, beach parties and music sessions, but over time both have found themselves drawn just as much to its quieter pleasures: untamed stretches of coastline, swathes of forest and the year-round communities of artists, makers and craftspeople clustered around the rural north and centre.
For Olivia, Ibiza first came into view through music. A London agency job brought her back and forth to the island for several years before a move into its club scene made things more permanent. She went on to run Pete Tong’s International Music Summit for four years, becoming firmly embedded in the network of DJs, producers and creatives that has long shaped Ibiza’s cultural identity.
Jack arrived with a different kind of address book. For a decade, he ran a luxury travel business, curating highly tailored expeditions across Asia and Africa for private clients. It was the kind of work that depended on discretion, instinct and a knack for making the difficult feel anything but – qualities that now shape his approach to concierge.
Today, Olivia takes the lead on events, from weddings and milestone celebrations to multi-day parties, while Jack handles the old-school art of knowing what’s happening, who to call and, just as crucially, when to suggest something else.
“A lot of it comes down to the people we know,” says Olivia. “We’ve both built strong relationships on the island over the years, and bringing those together means we can make things feel much more personal.”
For guests, that means another layer of local knowledge on the ground: longstanding relationships, trusted recommendations and the kind of access that is difficult to secure from afar. It could be knowing the stretch of coast you would never otherwise stumble on, the golden-hour spot without the crowds, the chef to call for dinner at the villa – or the maître d’ who might just find you a coveted summertime table at Jondal.
For both Olivia and Jack, though, good service is about more than getting through a door, or producing a seat when reservations seem impossible. “With concierge, you’re often very reactive – always on the other end of the phone,” says Jack. “But the other side is being proactive. Trying to inspire people to try something new, to consider something else. That’s just as important.”
There are, inevitably, the last-minute requests: guest-list entry, AAA passes, surprise breakfasts for the following morning, ordered at ten to midnight. “Nothing fazes us,” laughs Olivia.
More often, it’s the smaller things that make the biggest difference. A chauffeur ready when needed. A day boat stocked with lunch. Play equipment appearing for the children. A favourite bottle waiting in the fridge. The point is not having to think about any of it.
That philosophy is shared by BHB founder Harry Becher, who remains closely involved in the Ibiza side of the business. “It’s not always about the rock and roll,” he says. For him, it’s a question of trust: being responsive, straightforward and knowing when the best advice is to steer someone elsewhere.
Ultimately, the real skill lies in judgment: reading the person in front of you and understanding what will resonate with them. That becomes particularly relevant in Ibiza, where apparently contradictory versions of the island coexist within a few miles of one another. “That’s what’s so special about it here,” notes Jack. “You can do the wellness, you can do the hiking and the ceremonies, and then you can go to [UNVRS].”
That mix tends to draw people much like Ibiza itself – international, open-minded and curious enough to move between its different guises rather than choosing only one. It’s part of what keeps Olivia and Jack here too. Because after enough time on the island, the reasons for returning – or staying – are not always the same as the reasons you came.
For Olivia, that much is clear. “The nature is what I love about it here,” she says. “I worked in the music industry – that’s why I ended up in Ibiza – and I still love that side of it, but now I’m more about the sea and the beauty of it. The hiking and the swimming and the secret caves you can paddleboard to. It just makes you feel alive.”
After years spent knowing where everyone else should go, perhaps that’s the best introduction of all: knowing what lies beyond the guest list.
