What are you doing tonight? Fancy hitting NYC?
Painted BLACK from Matte Projects is a series of three theatrically immersive concerts interpreting and ultimately celebrating the ‘queen of all colors’ and its influence in music, art, design, nightlife, and New York culture.
Spanning over a course of two months in three acts, each Painted BLACK event has a distinct identity and musical genre, embracing a collection of artists across mediums, allowing each collective to mutually and uniquely interpret BLACK.
Though the first act kickstarted everything on 13 February, the remaining two acts are set to be just as AWESOME with Act II descending upon New York this evening and the date for the third act to be later announced. Held at Irving Plaza [The Gramercy Theatre], the Painted BLACK series will continue to be one of NYC's hottest events in the calendar for 2014.
Featuring some of Europe's most highly regarded electronic-music producers, Act I saw Austrian duo Klang Karussell headline the event and make their NYC debut. Their first single Sonnentanz reached over 1 million plays on Youtube and Soundcloud in its first month, creating a huge wave across Europe. Thomas Azier also featured with his unique dark-pop sound, to highlight his vocals with a deep beat-heavy, synth-driven and dark experimental electronic sound. MmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmMmLast but not least, Stefan Biniak who has been proclaimed "King of the Berlin Underground" and impressed the dance music world with his incredibly melodic original tracks and remixes, paired infectious house beats, complex piano and frequently warping vocals together to add more elements of darkness into his music.
Headlining Act II are New York natives DIIV. The atmospheric and dynamic Brooklyn four piece weave classic kraut, dreamy psychedlia and a primitive late 1980s Seattle crunch. Their album Oshin was an instant success upon release, finding its way onto the esteemed pages of Pitchfork and Altered Zones within just weeks. In contrast, Twin Shadow is a born crooner with an eclectic palate and a fever for the dance floor. Having recently toured Coachella, Pitchfork Music Festival and Bonnaroo, Twin Shadow will turn up the heat with a DJ set fuelled by Detroit techno, Brooklyn rock and funky vogue beats. You then have garage trio Guards, a Brooklyn-based indie band that went from a bedroom project to a critically acclaimed effort in the blink of an eye. The band will mix dream and indie rock sounds into Painted BLACK's atmosphernic musical experience.
Details of Act III are yet to be announced.
Each of Painted BLACK's performances will be paired with visually stunning interactive shows that have been created collaboratively with the performers to present shows and sets that have never been seen or heard before. Painted BLACK also recently announced a partnership with acclaimed Parisian-fashion house Maje. Maje will support the series, contributing a dark and sexy fashion perspective to the Painted BLACK discourse.
