The Royal Academy of Arts [RA] is an art institution based in Burlington House on Piccadilly in London. It has a unique position as an independent, privately funded institution led by eminent artists and architects. Its purpose is to promote the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate. Their artists represent many different perspectives, while all sharing a deep commitment to art with a strong belief in the contribution that artists make to the world. Just as the founders intended, the RA is still led by many of the greatest artists and architects of the day. Known as Royal Academicians, they are all practising artists who help to steer its vision and support its activities. From teaching in the RA Schools to deciding on exhibition programmes, the RA's are at the heart of everything the Royal Academy does.
