Reimagined fincas and contemporary coastal retreats realised by a roll-call of the island’s most in-demand architects.

Think Ibicencan architecture and what’s the first thing that comes to mind? A traditional whitewashed finca perhaps? Or something along more contemporary lines, featuring open-plan footprints and expansive panes of glass?

More often than not, island architecture blends old with new. Traditional structures adapted for everyday living; modern constructions that nod to the architectural legacy of the island. This selection of work-of-art rental villas by the masterminds behind Romano Arquitectos, Blakstad Design Consultants and Jaime Serra, among others, collectively feature all of the above. Ultimately, though, it’s not what unites these spaces that means they make the cut. It’s what sets them apart.

Can Mikkie, San José

Architect Jaime Romano, founder of Romano Arquitectos, has created a bold blueprint somewhere between modernism and brutalism at Can Mikkie. Strong, sculptural lines make a feature of light and shade here. The villa’s long, low-slung framework is softened by earthy tones and mid-century furniture, curated by interior designer Isabelle Stanislas. No matter where you are, there’s a seamlessness between inside and outside courtesy of floor-to-ceiling glass doors that transform each space into an external one. At its core, an open-plan kitchen and dining room, with frameless panes of glass, brings the wilder grounds beyond into view.

Can Amigo, Atzaro Valley

California meets the Atzaro Valley at Can Amigo, another offering by Jaime Romano. Across its single-storey footprint, the architect’s trademarks of space, light and connection are visible from every angle. Glass is used cleverly and extensively to shift perspectives. Wall-to-wall glazing flanks the living space, offering double-aspect views, while a wide-reaching picture window in the study puts nature at eye-level. The abundance of natural light this invites inside adds warmth to smooth concrete floors and wood-panelled walls – an apt foil to all the greenery.

Finca Encanto, San Miguel

Sabina ceilings and hulking stone hearths are all that remain of this 17th-century villa’s former incarnation as a monastery. Today, it’s been revived in a way that pays homage to the landscape. Designers Diego Alonso and Alexeja Pozzoni have left a light touch on the estate – think knotted wooden balconies, neutral walls and solid teak furniture that nods to the Balinese-style gardens beyond. The bedrooms have each been designed to access scenic private terraces, while the master is found in its own independent casita, with a vantage point that gazes out towards the mountains.

Casa del Árbol, Cala Moli

Peaceful, authentic and grounded: that’s how Ibiza Interiors sums up its recent transformation of Casa del Árbol. “The main concept for the project was the idea of connection. Our objective was to bring together a mid-century style with a contemporary island vibe,” reflects interior architect Jurjen van Hulzen. The result is both rustic and minimalist, balancing inspiration from designers such as Pierre Paulin and Mies van der Rohe with Balearic influences. Among the most striking features, a sunroom floods the living space with natural light. It’s just one way the villa celebrates its surroundings, landscaped by Arnaud Casaus.

Can Meno, Cap Martinet

Lush hillside in the background; ocean in the foreground, this Blakstad-designed villa is less a product of the landscape and more a response to it. From the moment you cross the threshold, the sea swims into view. Slide back vast glass doors to watch boundaries disappear. Interiors are both ultra-contemporary and timeless: flawless white walls, stone floors and cubic shapes keep distractions to a minimum. Outside, a sweeping staircase grandly paves the way to manicured gardens and a free-form pool that’s a departure from the villa’s clean-lined interiors.

Villa Mariposa, San Miguel

A traditional farmhouse reimagined as a rustic-luxe retreat. Villa Mariposa is the final masterstroke from Blakstad founder Rolph, no less (who has since handed over the reins to son, Rolf). As are the practice’s trademarks, the space fuses the fundamental tenets of Ibicencan architecture with contemporary functionality. The time-honoured pairing of white walls with Sabina beams remains, enhanced by restored joinery. Simplicity allows heritage details to take centre stage, from terracotta floors that have been shaped over the centuries to light wells that illuminate previously shadowy spaces.

Can Mayans, Santa Gertrudis

Another Blakstad gem, this time a traditional finca transformation. Simplicity and sensitivity holds sway at Can Mayans, with the finca’s rustic bones shining through the renovations. Traditional Sabina wood, terracotta tiles and wicker are elevated with bespoke joinery and designer furnishings. In the main living space, floor-to-ceiling doors open onto terraces with picture-postcard views.

Villa Elevado, Roca Llisa

Spaces centred around island living and barely-there boundaries characterise this villa by Jaime Serra. Expect a lateral plan that hugs the horizon, floor-to-ceiling windows that pay tribute to the views, and countless vantage points angled towards the ocean. A calming colour palette – curated by island-based studio Ibiza Interiors – natural materials and glass-fronted balconies embrace the beauty of Villa Elevado’s setting and add to the sense of flow between inside and out.

Finca La Inika, San Lorenzo

The vision of architect Ted Milano and interior design studio Studio C, Finca La Inka is a lesson in shape and form. The curves of its original arches are picked up in the rounded edges of headboards, wardrobes and freestanding baths. Wood, stone tiles and plaster set a soothing tone, while statement, sculptural furniture pops against white-walled backdrops. Private nooks and communal spaces are found throughout, offering corners for pause and play. The outside is just as inviting: rustic wooden doors draw you to an oval-shaped saltwater pool, skirted by tactile stone walls.
