    Lisbon

Sun spills across Lisbon’s seven hills for close to 300 days a year. Set along the Tagus River, the capital blends history with present-day momentum – making it a natural draw for a cosmopolitan crowd.

Terracotta roofs crown pastel buildings, trams rattle through cobbled streets and contemporary restaurants animate former merchant quarters. A thriving theatre, art and music scene sits alongside international schools and swift access to the airport, reinforcing Lisbon’s global outlook and everyday ease.

Yet it’s the convivial, village-like atmosphere that truly defines the city. In Lapa and Estrela, embassy-lined avenues give way to leafy gardens and grand villas with river views. Chiado’s classic architecture – apartments poised above elegant squares – provides a fitting backdrop for independent bookshops and artisanal cafés. Príncipe Real attracts a refined set, prized for its design-led boutiques, proximity to the financial district and exclusive properties.

    Cascais

Just 30 minutes west of Lisbon, Cascais shifts the mood from urban energy to coastal ease. Once a fishing village, it has evolved into one of the country’s most sought-after seaside towns often compared to the French Riviera, yet retaining an unmistakably Portuguese character.

A 15th-century fort still guards the harbour, where fishing boats bob beside sailing yachts. From sandy beaches and palm-lined promenades, it’s a short step to Michelin-starred restaurants, while the neighbouring courses at Quinta da Marinha and Oitavos Dunes draw keen golfers. Nearby, the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park offers forested walking trails and dramatic cliffside views.

Its residential pockets offer a range of settings. The Centro Histórico has a lively, walkable feel with contemporary apartments; Quinta da Marinha is known for expansive villas, equestrian facilities and gated privacy; while Birre, with its larger plots, appeals to families seeking space and a strong sense of community.

    Comporta

Comporta is quietly favoured by those in the know a place long associated with artists and those drawn to its refined, barefoot rhythm. Spanning a stretch of coastline and countryside around an hour south of Lisbon, it has become one of Europe’s most exclusive summer destinations, often compared to the Hamptons.

Here, rice fields meet wide Atlantic beaches, creating an effortless connection to nature. Days unfold between dune-backed shores and pine forests; evenings centre on relaxed, sea-to-table dining.

Above all, Comporta retains an unpretentious character, where prestige lies in privacy and space a sensibility reflected in its homes. Since the 1990s, a distinct architectural vernacular has emerged in response to the landscape: whitewashed cabanas, timber-clad villas and design-led estates sit discreetly among the sand and scrub.

    Porto

Portugal’s second city has stepped confidently into the spotlight. Set along the Douro River, Porto has a distinctly authentic character, where colourful façades in shades of ochre and blue rise alongside tiled churches and wrought-iron balconies. Its historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflects centuries of maritime wealth and craftsmanship.

Independent galleries, concept stores and an evolving culinary scene bring fresh energy to its walkable streets. Parque da Cidade offers a welcome sense of space, with sports facilities and cycle trails set across 83 hectares of greenery.

Ribeira remains the city’s postcard quarter, lively and riverside. Cedofeita draws a creative crowd with its markets and cafés, while Boavista has long been favoured by international residents. In Massarelos, river views lend a quieter atmosphere; in Foz do Douro, oceanfront promenades and elegant apartments appeal to those seeking sea air within the city.

    Alentejo

Making up nearly a third of Portugal, the Alentejo unfolds in a vast sweep of rolling hills, ancient cork forests and sun-baked olive groves beneath immense skies. It’s an expansive, still landscape less defined by urban pace or coastal bustle, yet increasingly sought after for its deep-rooted traditions and strong sense of community.

For a year-round coastal base, Vila Nova de Milfontes offers a quieter alternative to the Algarve’s more established towns. Comporta and Melides have become synonymous with thoughtfully designed second homes set among rice fields and dunes. Further inland, Évora remains the  region’s historice centrepiece – a UNESCO World Heritage Site with more than 2,000 years of history. Its Roman Temple and Gothic cathedral anchor a city of storied streets, sunlit squares and local restaurants, while a direct rail link to Lisbon provides easy access without compromising the sense of rural calm.
