With the autumn and winter months fast approaching, ski-fanatics are eagerly awaiting the first layer of powder snow to hit and thereby commence the ski season. Enjoyed by both skiers and non-skiers, the Alpine life brings fresh mountain air, a sense of tranquillity and endless jaw-dropping scenery. What better way to enjoy the season than to retreat to a secluded chalet on the mountain top with the slopes practically on your front doorstep. Adventuring across the European mainland, from Austria to France and Switzerland, we came across some of the continent’s most impressive ski resorts which we had to share.

The Chedi Andermatt

Set in the land of idyllic mountains, picturesque snowfalls and surreal panoramic views, The Chedi Andermatt is truly a one-of-a-kind get-away. Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps at 1,447 metres, this exclusive hotel marries Alpine chic with a contemporary Asian design to create a stylish yet intimate atmosphere throughout. Jean-Michel Gathy, chief designer of the five-star property, achieved an effortless cohesion between tradition and nature, using local elements throughout the various pockets of the hotel, including wood panelling, large traditional fireplaces and impressive terrace spaces that blend the interiors and exteriors seamlessly. An ice rink set in the middle of the hotel’s courtyard treats guests to breath-taking views of the Gemsstock Mountain whilst sipping on some delicious mulled wine. Not only do the stunning 123 rooms offer views over the village of Andermatt, the hotel is perfectly located with direct access to the cable car, taking you up 3,000 metres to the top of the mountain and offering what can only be described as pure joy.

Positioned directly next to the piste, providing guests an enviable ski-in and ski-out location, there’s no doubt that the three traditional wooden chalets encompass the ultimate winter holiday. An underground wooden chalet connected to the hotel, known as The Aurelio Clubhouse, is the ideal retreat after a long day on the slopes – featuring an indoor pool, cinema and spa. Need we say more about this skiing paradise? Offering 305 kilometres of unique slopes, as well as 85 gondolas and cable cars operating on the mountain, there’s a reason why Lech am Arlberg is known to be one of the top ski resorts to visit.
