‘Everyone needs colour in their home,’ says award-winning interior designer Charlotte Crosland ‘The neutral, playing safe, cold soulless interior that has been a trend now for ages is not for me. I like my designs to be different, just like people are different.’ Indeed, Charlotte’s work is all about people. Since opening her own interior design practice in 1990, she has become renowned for creating homes and interiors that are some of the most stylish around but at the same time always comfortable places to be in. ‘It’s important to love being in one’s home,’ says Charlotte. Perhaps because she has three children of her own, Charlotte has become something of a specialist in creating interiors for people with families – elegant, but not too precious. Her designs are full of bold, brave ideas that seem to suit the houses she transforms perfectly. Hallway walls covered in bold patterned wallpapers, bathrooms made brilliant with luxurious marble and elegant lighting, sitting rooms sumptuous with richly coloured cushions and rugs and jet-black kitchens with dazzling chequered linoleum floors all sit alongside each other in Charlotte’s harmonious, comfortably grand style. Recent commissions include the transformation of a run-down former embassy in Wimbledon into a stunning project for a property developer complete with an emerald mosaic swimming pool. The house was billed as “South London’s most expensive residence” and was short-listed for an IDFX best residential project award. On another commission, Charlotte teamed up with sister Neisha, using many of her famous range of fabrics, wallpapers, rugs and cushions to bring a luxurious touch to a two-bedroom apartment in Eaton Square. Increasingly, Charlotte’s work features furniture of her own design. What started as a couple of pieces created especially for awkward spaces has grown into a side line business of its own.
