Greige. Taupe on taupe. Yawn. If ever there was an antidote to the ‘paint it neutral’ brigade, this penthouse is certainly it. Possibly one of the most eye-catching properties we have ever marketed, it belonged to an artist who did not confine her love of colour to her paintings. The orange staircase pops out of the interior and contrasts beautifully with the vibrant blue walls. In the living room, brightly painted and embroidered Aztec-inspired furniture designed by the former owner added to the joyful feel.
Colour is often found in unexpected places in this flat. The vertically planed wood cupboards in the kitchen were the first things one noticed but a closer examination revealed an ikat- inspired plinth under the kitchen cupboards near the window. In the dining area, ashen shades of purple, amber and pink are a contrast in slightly more subdued shades. Texture was also used successfully throughout, with sheepskin throws, rich woods, leather and handwoven linens.
Perhaps our favourite room was the third-floor bedroom which also incorporated a study area and shower room. It led directly to one of the property’s two roof terraces and was given the owner’s signature touch of colour – this time in raspberry pink.
Originally designed by architects Jonathan Tuckey Design and Francois Girardin, the penthouse was their first project after leaving David Chipperfield’s practice. The interiors were subsequently revamped by the last owner. Asked what attracted her to the flat, her response was simple: space, space, space. We can’t argue. It truly is an amazing space, made even more so by the vendor’s eye for colour.
The flat sits on top of what was once the BBC studios in Shepherd’s Bush. As such, it offers a level of convenience and security that is rare: secure gated entry, underground parking and lift access.
