Addressing deep-rooted systemic prejudice in the world of interiors, this not-for-profit organisation are reshaping conceptions about design — championing it as an artform for all.

Founded by interior designers Alexandria Dauley and Sophie Ashby, United in Design’s mission statement is to address the lack of representation in the design field by providing an equal opportunity pathway into the industry, calling on colleagues and leaders to be part of that positive change. Launched in response to the death of George Floyd in 2020, the pair decided to launch United in Design fuelled by the belief that words are not enough and that what we need now is diversity in action.

Addressing the interior design industry in the UK, the charity places young, aspiring designers from under-represented communities in paid placements with prestigious companies, offering access to influential mentors and the opportunity to network early on. The pair hope it will be a catalyst in changing mindsets when it comes to the hiring process too. Their actionable roadmap also calls on big names in the design world to help diversify the industry, and are in turn supported by the charity to achieve these goals.
