Guided by modernist principles – the significance of light, proportion and a pared-back palette – this Chiswick-based studio’s projects toe the line between captivating and calming.

“Timeless elegance” is the trademark style of this architecture firm, says ng architecture’s founder Nick Gowing. The firm has worked on domestic and international projects: from Notting Hill and Chiswick, to France, Morocco, Brazil and Australia, Nick has mastered the configuration of space and light in all of his homes.

While ng architecture’s material palette might be restrained, their structural engineering is anything but ordinary. Take Notting Hill Gate, a triplex apartment that sees gallery-like proportions flooded with light through full-height glazing and glass roofs. Concrete stairs and a stainless steel balustrade adds urban flair – a precursor to the views from the sweeping roof terrace. Or there’s St Stephen’s Yard, two mews properties transformed with a steel-framed glass extension and cantilevered sculptural staircase. In every setting, expansive sheets of glass make for inspiring conduits between the indoors and out.
