From Georgian country houses to modern Greek villas, Thurstan Design embraces architectural variety offering dialogues between the past and present.

Founder, James Thurstan Waterworth, set out to produce varied interior design that harmonises with its architectural context and surroundings. After studying Interior Design at London’s KCL School of Design, he took on a junior position with designer Martin Brudnizki – leading to a role as European design director at Soho House. He later created his eponymous studio in 2018. His work with commercial and residential clients has granted him many award nominations, and a place in House & Garden’s Top 100 Designers in 2021.

James has and lived worked internationally – allowing his travels in the United States, China, Spain and Italy to inform his projects. He prioritises comfort and practicality in his designs, with the guiding ethos that the socio-cultural context of a building is imperative to its contemporary interior vision. A balance between antiques and bespoke furniture allows the old and new to work together, bringing historical and modern narratives to any environment. The ‘Thurstan Collection’ comprises authentic, one-of-a-kind pieces – from 17th century European to mid-century modern case pieces and interior accessories.
