Wow, what a home. This awesome property is the crux of cool where exuberant colours, furniture and finishes deliver an explosion of style. Located on the second floor of a Grade II listed, white stucco-fronted building, the lateral apartment has a traditional entrance yet springs a surprise as soon as you walk in.
The vibe throughout is cosmopolitan-cool, New York loft apartment, but there’s a je ne sais quoi to it too. We suspect it’s the owner’s West London flair and confidence in pulling it all together that shines through.
The star of the show is the open-plan reception space with high ceilings and large sash windows that give incredible views of the square. The décor is pretty immense, too. Beautiful hand-painted birds and white blossom rest upon a sea of gold on intricately painted sliding doors that lead to the kitchen. Where the kitchen is understated with its sleek white units, what elevates this property from being bland to wow is the floor-to-ceiling green subway tiles (Retro Metro from Fired Earth?) and the vintage mid-century chandelier.
This modern space is a contrast to the rest of the home, with immaculate-white marble tops and jade tiles providing a sense of calm and freshness.
Mid-century Ercol furnishings dominated the interiors although an Eero Saarinen dining table contrasted beautifully with the bent wood chairs. The owners also made a clever feature of their book collection by arrangeing them according to colour rather than anything more scientific. Massive floor-to-ceiling windows were given simple linen roman blinds to let the furnishings take centre stage.
The bedrooms continued with the simplistic theme. Although they featured the same windows, the owners resisted the temptation to do anything more than add simple venetian blinds. In the master bedroom, however, the predominant feature was not the windows but the oversized Stubbs reproduction of Whistlejacket from The National Gallery.
The Stubbs probably sums up the flat: an impressive showing on a simple background. It could not have been bettered.
