EASY LIVING

Pembridge Square, W2

‘Bold’ is an overused terms, especially in regards to decorating. The most innocuous schemes are labelled as ‘bold’ in interiors magazine just because they dared to put a long haired cushion on the sofa. This striking first floor flat overlooking Pembridge Square, however, truly earns the title, though. Rather than neutral creams or magnolias, the owners – guided by leading architects MSMR - were not afraid to experiment with colour. Deep charcoal walls provided the background for rainbow coloured art on the walls while multi-coloured goblets are lined up along the mantel. Oriental bentwood chairs flank the fireplace while Arne Jacobson chairs surround a dining table that sits atop a hand woven rug.

In the living room, another bold rug compliments the contemporary art on the walls and the oriental style desk. Ethnic cushions on the sofa tie in beautifully with the inlaid side tables. The contemporary kitchen is sleek and understated but the deeply stained wood units give it warmth and character. Charcoal hues make a return in the master bedroom but colourful pink and red bed linen stops anyone accusing the scheme of being greige. Even the children’s bedroom boasts a sharp burst of colour with a red panel hanging above the twin beds.

The owners clearly appreciated space, too. Rather than being tempted to carve up this substantial first floor flat in an Italianate villa into small rooms so as to maximise the number of bedrooms, they opted to revel in the flat’s vast proportions with its wide rooms and tall ceilings. The triple aspect windows overlook one of Bayswater’s most beautiful and tranquil squares yet it is mere steps from Notting Hill Gate and Westbourne Grove.

Bold but definitely beautiful.
