BOUDOIR CHIC

Chesterton Road, W10

Most bijou properties are described as ‘small but perfectly formed’ when that description is probably not even close to accurate. It actually takes quite a bit of ingenuity and vision to make a small flat or house work on a practical level and still feel spacious.

Fortunately for the owners of this flat, some of the hard work had been done for them. They purchased the property from renowned designer Suzy Hoodless who opened up the space by using light Farrow & Ball colours throughout and introducing outsized Osborne & Little wallpaper in the hallway to add a splash of colour and interest. Storage was added, often in hidden places such as under the stairs or within a vault.

In the kitchen, whose design the new owners retained, she painted the cabinets and floors pale grey, installed a reflective gold splashback and replaced the worktops with deeply coloured teak wood. On the lower floor, she even sacrificed a third bedroom to create a luxurious wet room.

The owners added their own stamp to the property, too. An ornate French bed dominated the master bedroom yet was made to feel more feminine with the addition of an angora throw and dusty pink cushions. They also made the most of the terrace that led off the kitchen to grow herbs and provide a nice place to relax at the end of the day, although the stairs led down to a sizeable urban garden below.

It is rare to find a maisonette measuring just over 1,000 square feet that can be truly described as perfectly formed but if any can, this is it.
