OFF THE WALL

Victoria Grove Mews, W2

'Eclectic' hardly even begins to describe this mews house near Notting Hill Gate...

The owners’ personalities definitely shine through with their mix of vintage furniture, art and unique artefacts collected from around the globe. The Eames Rocking Chair mixes with a 1970s era mustard yellow sofa, while the Indonesian style coffee table blends perfectly with the Art Deco inspired club chair. Though an original deco fireplace brings the room together, it's the contemporary lighting scheme with the futuristic light fixture spanning the room that really sets this space apart.

Sleek kitchen units paired with top-of-the-line gadgets and Miele appliances demonstrate that this is the home of a serious cook. However the look of earnest look is lightened with the addition of children’s magnets attached to the Westin extractor, show that the owners didn’t take themselves too seriously. Dispensing with a conventional set of tables and chairs, they opted for purple sofa and leather chairs coupled with a contemporary coffee table to create more of a snug than a traditional dining area.

Upstairs were three beautiful bedrooms and arranged around a central atrium. And oh what an atrium it was. Reminiscent of Santa’s grotto, this atrium had everything going for it and more. Embedded with rocks, plants, assorted bric-a-brac and even the occasional traffic cone, this was an atrium like no other. It flooded the house with natural light and was an incredible feast for the eyes.

It was quirky, yes, but isn’t that the spirit of Notting Hill?
