THE RETREAT

Courtnell Street, W2

When opting for a contemporary scheme, it is relatively straightforward to create something cool, sleek or trendy. What is often difficult to pull off is a feeling of cosiness in a modern space. The owner of this magnificent house in Notting Hill achieved it, however, and created a remarkable home in the process.

The warm colour scheme certainly contributes to the intimate feel of the living area, but it is the lighting that really makes the room. An often overlooked element of design, the numerous lighting sources – lamps, backlit shelves and dimmable overhead lights – make a large room feel snug and inviting. The owner’s personal collection of artifacts from around the world and an impressive library of favourite books immediately indicate that this is no show home. It is simply a really well-designed personal space.

In the kitchen, the industrial stainless-steel units and mirrored splashbacks contrast with the brightly coloured dining chairs surrounding a table that easily seats ten. The open shelving with its collection of pottery and cooking utensils demonstrates that this is a kitchen that's the scene of lots of friendly parties. The space gets more personal in the beautifully designed bathroom: the freestanding bath faces a roaring fire set within a vanity unit that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is practical.

The house is also a great setting for the owner’s eclectic art collection with sculptures and paintings displayed in almost every room. It was a beautiful home and we are sure the new owners love it as much as the previous owner did.
